Michael Timsit is an artist who belonged to the Op art movement, specializing in kinetic art, and who collaborated with Roche Bobois on this small, limited-edition series of furniture. Few pieces were produced.
Roche Bobois is a furniture company born in the 1950s. Originally, it was the association of two families, the Roche family and the Chouchan family. Jacques Roche opens his first store in a former theater on rue de Lyon in Paris. His two sons, Philippe and François join him; together, they decide to launch into the distribution of the best specialists in French contemporary furniture, strongly inspired by the Bauhaus, which are today big names, such as Minvielle, Steiner or Airborne. They also publish projects by renowned designers such as Pierre Paulin or Marc Berthier. As for the Chouchan family, they sell furniture on boulevard de Sébastopol in a store called “Au Beau Bois”, which will later become Bobois…
In the 1960s, the Roches and the Chouchans went to the Copenhagen Salon and discovered Scandinavian furniture there. They set out to import this type of furniture to Paris. It was in those years that they made their first advertisements, notably in Elle magazine. It was during this period that Roche Bobois became a brand in its own right.
In the 1970s, Roche Bobois became even more well known for its production of sofas, essential for broadcasting television in an ever-increasing number of homes. The company is now present in many countries around the world. The 50th anniversary of Roche Bobois was celebrated in collaboration with fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaulthier.
