In 1958, Van Apeldoorn established his own wooden furniture manufacturing company, which was later renamed “Ate van Apeldoorn meubelmakerij”. He specialized in creating solid wood furniture, primarily using oak and pine. Van Apeldoorn’s style is influenced by the organic design movement, with simple and functional shapes. His furniture is often constructed with traditional wooden joints, such as mortises and tenons, without the use of nails or screws. Van Apeldoorn created many iconic pieces of furniture throughout his career, such as the “Dungeon” chair and the “Vierkantje” table. His designs were widely exhibited and became very popular in the 1970s. Despite his success, van Apeldoorn remained an independent artisan throughout his career, refusing to mass produce his designs. He has always highlighted the quality of his furniture and the durability of their materials. Ate Van Apeldoorn left a significant legacy in the field of solid wood furniture design and manufacturing, and his designs are still highly regarded today.
