Gabriel Sue, Oil on panel representing a bulldog, circa 1900

Gabriel Sue, attributed to.

Bulldog, represented an oil on a wood panel made by Gabriel SUE (1867-1958) a French animal painter trained to the National Society of Beaux-Arts of Bordeaux and Julian Academy of Paris.

Gabriel Sue (1867-1958) was a French painter who exhibited in Paris at the Salons of the National Beaux-Arts Society, Independents Salons, Autumn Salons, French Animal Painters Salon and realized for these and the Canine Society some posters.
This oil of the artist reveals the main characteristics of the animal painter: he chooses his favorite animal as subject and constructed the space with freedom by using some determined shapes, likewise the small cubes used by Cezanne.
The touch is free and wild, and on Gabriel Sue paintings colors are still very bright: they’re applied, a bit likes Gaugin’s, in flat with a lot of contrasts with each others ; that underline the constructions choices and add a strong decorative impact to the painting. That explains maybe why this oil still looks very fresh and modern.
