Lighting manufacturer Maison Raak was founded in 1954 by Carel O. Lockhorn in the Netherlands. Initially working for Philips in Eindhoven, she later opened a store in Amsterdam, creating sophisticated, elegant and futuristic lighting designs in glass and metal.
In the 1960s, Raak teamed up with artist and glassmaker Willem van Oyen to create unusual lighting fixtures resembling stained-glass windows with abstract motifs. The company also collaborated with leading international designers and architects such as Evert Jelle Jelles, Sergio Asti, Bertrand Balas and Nanny Still. Raak’s best-known models are the cylindrical Fuga Lamp and the hugely successful Globe 2000 range of lighting fixtures.
Lockhorn sold the company in 1974, but remained director until 1977. He was instrumental in developing the “Space Age” style of lighting in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1999, the company joined the Centre for Light Architecture in Drachten.
