The Baccarat crystal factory was created in 1764, during the reign of Louis XV, who granted Louis-Joseph de Montmorency-Laval authorization to create a glassworks in Baccarat in Lorraine. It was named Verrerie Saint-Anne in 1775 then, after the difficulties encountered during the French Revolution, it was bought by the industrialist Aimé-Gabriel d’Artigues, owner of the Vonêche glassworks and crystalworks in Belgium, who transformed it into a crystalworks in 1816. In 1823, the manufacture participated for the first time in the Exhibition of Products of French Industry and on this occasion Louis XVIII ordered a glass service from it, which then inaugurated a long series of royal orders. In 1827, the factory presented chandeliers for the first time, which would become one of Baccarat’s trademarks and illuminate the largest homes in the world, perfectly combining extravagance and tradition thanks to excellent know-how. During the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855, the crystal factory amazed the world by presenting a 140-light chandelier, which was rewarded with a gold medal. Baccarat has developed, over the decades, a certain number of glass services, which have made the Manufacture famous, such as the Harcourt glass service, created in 1841, which became the signature of a French art of living. In 1860, Baccarat registered its brand and gained momentum in luxury crystal making. In the 1880s-1890s, the crystal industry developed its activity internationally: India, South America, the United States, Russia. In addition, it developed the creation of pieces in different areas such as the size of perfume bottles, with the opening of a factory in 1907, exclusively dedicated to this use; or, in the 1930s, the creation of jewelry. Baccarat’s prestigious commissions such as the Tsar’s candelabra for Nicholas II, the Juvisy service for President Emile Loubet, the Chambord service for Aga Khan III Mohamed Shah, the Paraison service for the Maharajah of Indore, the Fillon service for President Roosevelt… will forge over the years its reputation which continues today to symbolize the excellence of French know-how.
