Peter Ghyczy
(1940) is a naturalized German Hungarian designer. He ran away from Budapest in 1956 due to political troubles and moved to Bonn in Germany. He studied sculpture in Düsseldorf and then the architecture in Aix-la-Chapelle from 1960. He worked during his studies for the architect Rudolf Steinbach and realized projects in Paris and Egypt. After a thesis, he graduated in 1967.
After his studies, he realized furniture by working with great furniture produces such as Vitra. At this period he met his first success with the Egg chair recognizable with its unique design. He only used plastic and worked with Reuter that also produced the Easy Chair and the GN2 Lounge Chair in 1971.
He moved to Netherlands in the 1970’s to found his design studio. His first collection, the “Pioneer Series” is realized from a new method of glass fixation on metal giving a floating aspect to glass. It became the Peter Ghyczy signature.
Today he continues to create with his son Felix that became artistic and general director of the company. By mixing engineering and aestheticism, their furniture perfectly matches functionnality and beauty, by also keeping this modernity that Peter creates in the 1960’s.
