Patinated feminine bronze sculpture titled “Young Lady with a Gourd” (“La jeune fille à la calebasse”) representing a black woman holding a gourd, only wearing a loincloth and jewels at the ankles, knees, neck, forearms and wrists.
Signed “Darbaud” on the base and numbered 6/8.
French work from the late 20th century.
Jacques Darbaud (1943) is a French artist who did his studies in Paris, in the Academy of the Grande Chaumière and then to the Academy of André Lhote. He first worked as a decorator for cinema and television. In 1993, he opened his own sculpture workshop where he created artworks inspired by Africa. His fascination for this continent came for the Darbaud discovery of the work from Herbert Ward.
His naturalist style, very close from the models he represents, give to his work an ethnographic dimension.
