Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) is an Italian-born architect, interior designer and architectural theorist. She trained as an architect in Milan in the 1950s, at a time when Italian architecture was engaged in a historical cultural research on the recovery of architectural values of the past and the existing built environment and joined the Neoliberty movement. Aulenti is part of this trend, which is at odds with rationalism. At the 13th Milan Architecture Biennale in 1964, she designed the Italian pavilion. From 1966 to 1969, she was vice-president of the Society of Italian designers. She created stagings (notably for the director Luca Ronconi), furniture, various fittings, gardens, housing, hotels, schools and stores.
She became internationally renowned in the 1980s.
From 1980 to 1986, she was the project manager for the rehabilitation and transformation into a museum of the Orsay train station in Paris, a project for which she became famous in France. From 1982 to 1985, she redeveloped the Georges Pompidou National Center for Art and Culture. From 1985 to 1992, she rehabilitated the Palacio Nacional de Montjuic in Barcelona into the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

In furniture, her main achievements are the lamp “Pipistrello” (1965), the chair “4854” (1968) or the furniture “Aulenti” (1969).
She has designed furniture lines for Knoll and Artemide.
