Jean-Baptiste Tilliard I (1686-1766) came from a large carpenters family and was considerate as the most talented Louis XV reign seating creator. He played an important part in the French Rocaille style. He signed seating with his name but also other details are typical of his production. Indeed, the carved motif with a heart commonly inserted in a cartouche that adorned the top rail of the backseat or angles or the middle of the apron, like in our pair of armchairs, are characteristic of his work. Some may consider it as a second signature of Tilliard.
