Giuseppe Scapinelli (1911-1982) was an Italian settled in Brazil and one of the most important developers of the Brazil modern style. Graduated from architecture in Rome, he moved to Sao Paulo in 1948. In the 1950’s he opened the Margutta Gallery, a showroom where he exhibited interior decors and furniture, among others the ones he created. He made furniture with totally independent in its form from Bauhaus and Ulm schools.
Scapinelli didn’t make mass productions and its furniture were mainly in wood, with a very quality of execution. Its productions alterned or combined a certain Italian classicism, aerodynamic and futurist lines and biomorphic shapes, that are quite close to some Italian contemporary creations of this time. Scapinelli was also a complete artist that included drawing, painting, sculpture or even ceramic in its furniture.

Joaquim Tenreiro (1906-1992) was a Portuguese designer settled in Brazil in 1928. He is known for its furniture with fluid shapes and balanced and light design. He mainly worked with Jacaranda, also known as Rio Rosewood. He studied geometric design and practiced painting, then choose carpentry. He was hired as designer assistant at Laubisch & Hirth, an important producer in eclectic furniture destined to luxury customers. His very personal creations truly began in 1941 after he met Francisco Inácio Peixoto and his architect, Oscar Niemeyer. After this first modern adventure, Niemeyer regularly associated Tenreiro to design furniture in its public and private projects.
Tenreiro partnered a commercial director and opened in 1942 a workshop, Langenbach and Tenreiro and opened later two shops, one in Rio and the other in Sao Paulo. His company closed in 1968 and Tenreiro returned to his first loves: the Art, more particularly painting and constructivist sculpture. The whole ensemble of its furniture should be considerate understood and see by keeping this first artistic vocation in mind.
