Alain Richard (1926-2017) is an important designer of the post-war period. A student of the National School of Decorative Arts, he graduated top of his promotion in 1949, interior architecture section. In particular, he received the teaching of René Gabriel, a great figure in the aesthetics of Reconstruction, whose studio he joined as a collaborator. After a stint in the design office of Marcel Gascoin, another figure of the period, he founded his own agency in 1952 with his wife Jacqueline Iribe, designer of furnishing textiles who notably worked for Knoll International. It is with his own agency that he designs furniture for the Cité universitaire. On this occasion, on this construction site, he met the director of the publishing house Meubles TV. This is yet another collaboration that begins. He became the star designer of Meubles TV with André Monpoix. In 1958, he received the grand prize at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels. Then, in the 1960s, he joined the group 4, created by the publisher Charron, with three of his colleagues: Joseph-André Motte, René-Jean Caillette and Geneviève Dangles. It was exhibited at the X Triennale in Milan. He also participates in the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Salon des Arts Ménagers on numerous occasions. In 1964, he won the prestigious René Gabriel Prize.
In the 1970s, Alain Richard participated in major projects for public commissions such as the Hauts-de-Seine prefecture in Nanterre, with the architect André Wogenscky, a pupil of Le Corbusier, or even the interior design of around twenty museums, including the Louvre (renovation of the Etruscan and Greco-Roman rooms).
Finally, Alain Richard wrote texts and articles in French reviews such as l’Oeil, Architecture d’Aujourd’hui and la Maison Française.
