Vicke Lindstrand (1904-1983) was a Swedish designer specialized in glass, textiles and ceramic. He began commercial studies and then turned to glass art. In 1928, he was employed by the Orrefors company where he began his experiences of enameled and engraved glass by revolutionning some techniques. He invented with Gustav Bergkvist and Edvin Öhrström the “Ariel” technique that consisted to inlay bubbles in colored glass to decorate.
He left Orrefors in 1943 and until 1950 worked as an artistic director for Uppsala Ekeby where he realized different stoneware items as pots or figural sculptures.
After this period, he became the artistic director of Kosta and continued to create the same pieces as in Orrefors company but added more colors. The last ten years of his life, he worked as a freelance with Hanne Dreutler and Arthur Zirrnsack at the Glashyttan Studio at Ahus.

Kosta is a glass company founded in 1742 by Generals Koskull and Staël von Holstein, located in the Sweden province of Smaland. At its beginning, the company exclusively produced utilitarian glass as windows, bottles, glasses or chandeliers for a royal, noble or merchant customer who could offer expensive glass pieces. During a long time, glassmakers came from Bohemia and we had to wait many decades before Swedish people succeeded to blow glass themselves.
During the International Exhibition of Art and Industry of Stockholm in 1897, Kosta was criticized because it exhibited items coming from many parts of Europe. It gave the idea to the company to employ its own designers as Gunnar Wennerberg, Ewald Dahlskog, Tyra Lundgren or Sven Erixson.
The company, initially called AB Aforsgruppen changed its name in 1976 and called Kosta Boda AB and then joined the Orrefors society in 1989. Since 2004, a part of the production is relocated principally in Europe but also in Asia, while continuing to use its own techniques developed in Sweden.
