Born in 1814 and died in 1897 Jean CAROLUS is a painter from the second half of the XIXth century. The famous neoclassic belgian painter François Joseph NAVEZ was his mentor.

He is belgian but he worked in France during his whole life. He is specialized in interior and genre scene. His precious style is typical. Most of his scene take place in rich and sophisticated interiors. When the scene takes place outside, the characters are all fancy dressed. The wealth of his characters is a characteristic of his work. Jean CAROLUS likes to paint elegant and wealthy fabric. Also, he focus on the attitude of characters. He also did a lot of engraving.

One of his painting « Une partie de billard sous Louis XV » is exhibited in Belgium, at the museum of Ypres.

Many paintings of this artist are sold in auction house, particulalry at Sotheby’s and Christie’s : the19 april 2005, at Christie’s NYC, the painting « The recital » was sold 36 000$.
